Brisbane City Council is upgrading lighting and widening the shared path on the North Brisbane Bikeway from Herston Road to Gilchrist Avenue, Brisbane.

Construction has started and is expected to be complete in mid-October, subject to suitable weather and site conditions.

The North Brisbane Bikeway will be closed between Herston Road and Gilchrist Avenue for the duration of these works. A short detour will be available for cyclists via Gilchrist Avenue and Herston Rd. Traffic control and signage will be in place to safely direct pedestrians and cyclists.

The project will involve:

– installing six new LED lights and poles between Herston Road and Gilchrist avenue

widening a 40 metre length of the shared path from Herston Road towards the overpass to improve safety and provide a consistent path width.

Construction will involve installing underground infrastructure, such as conduits and inspection pits, for the lighting, and excavation and concrete pours to widen the pathway. Following installation of the lights and poles, electrical connection to the lights will be arranged. This can take a number of weeks following construction.

Works have been taking place Monday to Saturday from 7am to 5pm, with some non-noisy works on Sundays.

Council is working to provide a well-connected network of safe and continuous bikeway routes and is investing $100 million over the next four years through the Better Bikeways 4 Brisbane program.

The installation of new or upgraded lighting on bikeway routes will improve safety and amenity for all pathway users. These upgrades will help to continue the growth of cycling by providing a safe and accessible network.
