COMMERCIAL ROAD DRAINAGE UPGRADE – TENERIFFE

Start of construction

Brisbane City Council will be installing new stormwater drainage infrastructure along Commercial Road from Vernon Terrace to Florence Street, Teneriffe. Works will also enter Chermside Street, Kent Street and Harcourt Street. These works are planned to start early February 2019, and will be complete late 2019, weather and site conditions permitting.

The stormwater system in this area is being upgraded with new, larger infrastructure to improve flood immunity for the community.

This project is part of Council’s commitment to ensuring our city has the services and infrastructure to meet the needs of future generations.

The upgrade works will involve:

 installing a new 1650 mm stormwater pipe along Commercial Road from Vernon Terrace to Florence Street along with smaller diameter pipes to connect to the existing drainage system
 installing new gully pits and manholes
 relocating the existing light poles on Kent Street
 removing three semi-mature golden rain trees and vegetation in private property along Harcourt Street. New trees will be planted in the closest suitable area to where trees were removed
 sealing abandoned pipes and filling with concrete.

Construction will primarily take place between 6.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Where works cannot be safely carried out during the day, night works may be required and these would take place 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday. Council will work to minimise the occurrence of night works wherever possible.

What to expect during construction

Works will be completed in sections starting from Vernon Terrace working towards Florence Street. In order to safely complete the works in each section, on-street parking will be restricted in sections of up to 50 metres. Once a section of the work has been completed, the area will be reinstated and on-street parking will be returned as soon as practical.

For the safety of workers, pedestrians and cyclists, the work area will be fenced for the duration of works. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

During construction some properties in close proximity to the work may experience some construction noise, dust, vibration and increased truck movements. These aspects will be monitored and every effort will be made to minimise the impacts on the local community.

A temporary detour will be in place for the initial stage of works due to the proximity to the Commercial Road and Vernon Terrace intersection. Once the works have progressed a safe distance from the intersection, a temporary lane closure will be required on Commercial Road during the construction to facilitate the remaining work.

Traffic controllers and signage will be in place to safely direct road users around the site. Motorists may experience some delays as they move through the area and Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. Access to residential car parks will remain open, advance notification will be provided should any access impacts arise.

The removal of three semi-mature golden rain (Koelreuteria paniculata) trees will be required along Harcourt Street as the roots are in close proximity to the new drainage pits. Replanting will be undertaken in the closest practical area to where the trees were removed. The tree removal will be conducted in consultation with arborists and will be offset as per Council’s environmental guidelines.

Once complete, these works will improve the drainage system by increasing capacity and minimising potential flooding impacts in the area.

Council would like to thank the community in advance for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the drainage capacity of the area.
