Below is an extract of my speech to the Brisbane City Council Chamber on the election of Brisbane’s new Lord Mayor Cr Adrian Schrinner and Deputy Mayor Cr Krista Adams.

Chair it gives me immense pleasure to speak today to endorse Brisbane’s 17th Lord Mayor, my good friend Adrian Schrinner.

But before I do, I would like to place on record my sincere gratitude to Graham and Anne Quirk.  Two people who have decided their lives to make Brisbane the wonderful place it is today.

Two people who have earned the grateful thanks of an entire city for their passion, advocacy and commitment.

Two people I am proud to call lifelong friends. A Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress like no other.

Graham and Anne – thank you for everything. I wish you nothing but the best for the future and hope you see you and your family enjoying out and about enjoying all the wonderful things in Central Ward like Howard Smith Wharves that you delivered.

Chair, today heralds an exciting new chapter in Brisbane’s story.

Today, we get to vote for someone to be a successor to Graham Quirk, to carry on his legacy and to offer new leadership for a new world city.

Today, I’m proud to say I’ll be supporting Adrian Schrinner as Brisbane’s next Lord Mayor.

Chair one of the most distinguishing features of both Graham Quirk and Adrian Schrinner is that leadership is not about a title or a designation.

For Graham and Adrian, and in fact for everyone on this side of the chamber, leadership is about making an impact and getting results. It’s about influencing others to spread your passion and it’s about inspiring others.

And that’s the difference between those on this side of the Chamber and those opposite.

Because those opposite have a one track mind -they only think about elections.

They don’t make any impact.

They don’t get results.

They don’t influence and

They certainly don’t inspire.

I’m proud to be part of a strong and united team that thinks about the future, the next generation and the Brisbane we want our children to thrive in.

I’m proud to be part of a team that listens, acts and delivers rather than one that seeks only to disrupt, smear and win at all costs.

Under our new Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor, my residents and the people of Brisbane can be asssured that we will never stop working together, we will never stop making a positive impact, we will never stop influencing and we will never stop inspiring.

Chair, we will never stop working together to deliver the essential services people expect and demand of their council.

Working together to make it easier to move around our city with new pedestrian and cycle links, better roads and more public and active transport options.

Working together to deliver economic growth and expanding opportunity for all.

Working together to ensure innovative businesses have the support they need to thrive and grow in the years to come,

Working together to protect and enhance our unique and spectacular local environment and deliver more green and open space.

Working together to creating a more inclusive community and working together to create more to see and do.

Most importantly Chair, we will never stop working together to make Brisbane an even better place to work, rest and play.

Chair, traditions change and modify with each generation and I’m excited about what Cr Schrinner’s leadership and vision.

I know from working closely with Cr Schrinner that good things will happen. And Brisbane will continue to be the envy of Australia.

With new members joining the Administration soon, I’m also excited to hear their perspectives on how we can continue to grow and evolve so we can continue to achieve great things for the people of Brisbane.
