New sports-themed CityCat hits the water
Public and Active Transport Chairman Cr Adrian Schrinner has today unveiled Brisbane’s newest sports-themed CityCat, which has been adorned in the eye-catching colours of the ‘International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments’ to celebrate Australia’s first INAS Global Games.
Cr Schrinner said the INAS Global Games were the world’s largest sporting event for athletes with an intellectual impairment and would boost Brisbane’s reputation as an inclusive and accessible city.
“Council is a major supporter of the INAS Global Games, which will attract more than 1,000 international athletes to compete in nine international sports,” Cr Schrinner said.
“With only one year to go, we are today unveiling Brisbane’s 18th sports-themed CityCat that will proudly display the colours of the INAS Global Games, coming to our city in October 2019.”
CEO of the Global Games Sports Company Robyn Smith said she was delighted to see the event celebrated with a branded CityCat.
“It will not only promote this inclusive event to the Brisbane community, but showcase the world’s best athletes who will compete and demonstrate that their impairment is no barrier to sporting excellence,” she said.
The unveiling of the new sports-themed CityCat comes as Council announced the start of new express ‘SpeedyCat’ services from Monday September 24.
Cr Schrinner said more than 100 weekly express services would operate between Northshore Hamilton and Riverside, as well as services between North Quay and the University of Queensland, cutting travel times for the city’s river commuters.
“These express services will operate during weekday peak periods, allowing passengers to travel between the University of Queensland and North Quay in as little as 15 minutes,” he said.
“The express services will also service terminals at Apollo Road in Bulimba, Teneriffe, Guyatt Park in St Lucia and West End, to boost travel options for residents so they can spend less time travelling and more time at home with family and friends.
“The completion of river works for the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade now means we can roll out new SpeedyCat services, however this new timetable will also incorporate changes to other river transport services, including CityCats, CityFerries, CityHoppers and Cross River Ferries.
“The number of existing CityCat services will be maintained, however there will be a go-slow section of the river while works on Queen’s Wharf Brisbane are undertaken from the river.
“We are committed to keeping residents informed of these changes and will be notifying river transport passengers with information and notices at terminals.
