CR VICKI HOWARD

As a long-standing resident of New Farm, Councillor Vicki Howard has proudly represented Brisbane’s vibrant inner-city communities since being elected to Brisbane City Council in 2012. Throughout her years of public service, Vicki has built a reputation as a passionate advocate for community connection, cultural development, local heritage and the arts, working tirelessly to strengthen the social fabric that makes Brisbane such a vibrant and inclusive city.

A local, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, neighbour and dedicated community volunteer, Vicki is known for her hands-on approach and unwavering commitment to the people she serves. Her passion for Brisbane’s inner northern suburbs drives her determination to ensure Central Ward receives strong and effective representation, delivering the services, opportunities and quality of life residents deserve.

Vicki has built a reputation as a practical and collaborative leader who brings people together to achieve positive outcomes. She is widely respected for fostering partnerships between residents, community organisations, businesses, artists, cultural institutions and government to strengthen neighbourhoods and create lasting benefits for the wider community.

As Chair of Brisbane City Council’s Communities and Arts portfolio, Vicki oversees some of the city’s most significant community assets, services and programs.

Her responsibilities extend across Brisbane’s vast network of community facilities, leased premises, sporting clubs, community organisations, libraries, cultural venues and neighbourhood programs that support millions of interactions by residents and visitors every day. Through these services, Vicki helps ensure Brisbane remains a connected, active, inclusive and resilient city where people of all ages and backgrounds can participate fully in community life.

A tireless advocate for grassroots sport, Vicki understands the important role that local clubs, volunteers and community organisations play in building stronger communities. She has championed support for the hundreds of sporting clubs, leased facilities and community groups that deliver opportunities for recreation, health, wellbeing, volunteering and social connection across Brisbane. Her work impacts the daily lives of countless residents who use Council-supported facilities and services to learn, play sport, connect with others and engage with their local community.

Alongside her commitment to community development, Vicki has become one of Brisbane’s leading champions for arts and culture.

She has played a significant role in supporting and promoting major cultural initiatives, including the Brisbane Portrait Prize, MELT Festival, the Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards, as well as exhibitions and programs delivered through the Museum of Brisbane and the Brisbane Powerhouse. Through her leadership, Council has continued to invest in programs that provide opportunities for emerging and established artists, support creative organisations, encourage community participation in the arts and celebrate Brisbane’s unique cultural identity.

Vicki has long recognised that the arts are not only culturally important but also play a vital role in economic development, tourism and community wellbeing.

Her advocacy for festivals, public art, live music, theatre, creative industries and cultural institutions has helped strengthen Brisbane’s reputation as one of Australia’s most vibrant and culturally dynamic cities. She has consistently championed initiatives that support local artists, create employment opportunities for Queensland creatives and provide diverse, high-quality cultural experiences for audiences across Brisbane.

Throughout her career in local government, Vicki has remained committed to ensuring Brisbane remains a city where people can work, rest and play, and will continue to be a visible and energetic advocate for the people, organisations and initiatives that make Brisbane such a great place to live.
