Thousands of Brisbane households have become cleaner and greener thanks to the Schrinner Council’s successful compost rebate program.
More than 10,000 Brisbane households benefit from Council compost rebate
Thousands of Brisbane residents are flexing their green thumbs and helping to reduce landfill by investing in home composting equipment.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner today announced more than 10,000 households had now benefited from Council’s compost rebate since the program was introduced in 2020.
Under the rebate, Brisbane residents can receive a rebate of up to $70 when they purchase eligible composting and worm farming equipment.
“We are committed to ensuring Brisbane remain clean, green and sustainable,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Composting and worm farming are effective ways to produce rich compost for your garden, reduce the amount of food waste that ends up in landfill and cut emissions.
“With this week marking National Recycling Week, we are thrilled to announce so many Brisbane residents have benefitted from this important program.
“Council has handed out more than $717,000 under this program so far and we are keen to encourage more residents to make a positive environmental impact from their own backyards.”
Items purchased under the program so far include compost bins, worm farms, bokashi, in-ground composters and compost aerators. Which means that whether you live in a house or in an apartment, are an owner or a renter there is a solution available for you to help reduce food and green waste going to landfill.
Since the program’s inception, The Gap, Sunnybank Hills, Calamvale, Tarragindi and Runcorn have been the top five suburbs to have adopted composting.
Cr Schrinner said Council continues to invests in a range of programs to help ensure Brisbane remains clean and green.
“From community-based environment and sustainability grants to our free native plants program, we encourage all residents to take care of their corner of the community as we all work together to ensure Brisbane gets even better.”
