Adelaide Street King George Square and Unclog Brisbane’s Bus Bottleneck

Ten bus stops in the King George Square and Queen Street bus stations will undergo significant improvement works so commuters can seamlessly enter and exit Brisbane Metros.

Transport Chair Ryan Murphy said the bus stops would be temporarily relocated from 11 December until mid-2024 to accommodate the works.

“With two-thirds of all public transport trips taken on a bus, the turn-up-and-go, fully-electric Brisbane Metro is integral to keeping up with our growing city’s need for better public transport,” Cr Murphy said.

“The work we have been undertaking in the CBD has been the most complex part of the Brisbane Metro project but will help unblock the bottleneck and boost the capacity of Brisbane’s busway network by two-thirds.

“Brisbane Metro is the first of its kind in Australia and this next stage of works will upgrade station doors to enable a phased roll-out of turn-up-and-go Metro services from next year.”

Each Metro is 24 metres in length, with three passenger compartments able to carry up to 170 people at a time.

Brisbane City Council’s standard rigid buses are 12 metres in length, with capacity for up to 77 people.

Brisbane Metro will also be one of the most accessible forms of public transport in Australia with automated on-request ramps, low-floor accessible boarding, next-stop audio plus hearing loops, passenger information displays with dynamic route information, three large mobility aid bays and 10 priority seats in each Metro.

“These works will involve replacing and realigning platform doors to ready the city’s bus stations for high-capacity Metro vehicles,” Cr Murphy said.

“To help keep Brisbane’s bus network moving, we’ll be staging these works so King George Square and Queen Street bus stations can remain open.

“While the stops where people get their bus may change, the stations will remain open and service frequency and reliability will not be affected during these works.”

The following stops will temporarily close until mid-2024 to replace platform screen doors to be replaced to accommodate new Brisbane Metro vehicles as we Unclog Brisbane’s Bus Bottleneck.
