East Street drain upgrade

East Street drain upgrade

East Street, Fortitude Valley

Storm water management is especially important in subtropical regions like Brisbane because of the intense, seasonal rainfall patterns and the rapid urban growth we are experiencing.

East Street Drain Works are upcoming

Council is undertaking rehabilitation works to the stormwater drain between Wickham Street

and Ann Street, to improve stormwater flow,  and support the long-term resilience of the

drainage network.

When will this work take place?

Start Mid-July 2025

Finish September 2025, weather and

site conditions permitting

Time and day

7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday

What does this work include?

Our restoration works include replacing and repairing damaged sections of the drain and relining the drain with a new structural liner.

Works will take place underground via the access chamber on East Street. No excavation work will be required on East Street.

Where will the works be?

Works will take place within the drain, below the roadway, between Wickham Street and Ann Street, Fortitude Valley.

Why is this work happening?

We are rehabilitating the East Street drain after inspections found damage and potential risk to the heritage listed brick drain.

This work is part of a larger relief drainage program to strengthen Brisbane’s stormwater system and improve flood resilience within the Fortitude Valley stormwater catchment.

Earlier works in the area, including the construction of an access chamber, were completed in recent years to support future restoration and maintenance.

Completing this work now will help extend the life of the asset, avoid more costly disruptions later and help keep our city safe and prepared during wet weather.

What does this mean for me?

During these works:

  • East Street will be temporarily reduced from 3 lanes to 1 during working hours, to allow room for construction activities
  • 6 car parking bays adjacent to works will be unavailable until all works are completed.

You may notice:

  • increased noise, truck movements, vibration and dust
  • minor travel time delays during work hours while lane closures are in place
  • traffic signage in place to safely direct road users around the site.

All traffic lanes on East Street will be reopened to traffic during the day.
