Improving shade, comfort, and walkability in time for the 2032 Games.
As Brisbane prepares to welcome the world for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we’re taking bold steps to ensure our city leaves a legacy that goes well beyond the sporting arena with our Olympic Tree Planting Program.
That’s why Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and I have announced a $1.9 million investment in new tree planting across Brisbane — an initiative that will grow a greener, cooler and more sustainable city for generations to come.
This funding will see thousands of new trees planted in parks, along footpaths, suburban streets, and throughout key Olympic precincts, helping to create shady, vibrant public spaces that reflect the best of Brisbane’s outdoor lifestyle.
Brisbane is a subtropical city, and trees play a critical role in shaping our liveability.
They cool our streets in the heat of summer, reduce storm water runoff, improve air quality, increase biodiversity, and support mental and physical health.
This planting program will focus on enhancing canopy cover in areas where it’s needed most — not just in high-profile Olympic venues but in neighbourhoods across the city – bringing shade and beauty to the everyday places where people live, walk, rest, and connect.
Every tree will be carefully selected for its suitability to Brisbane’s climate, with a focus on native species and long-lived shade trees that support local wildlife and thrive in our conditions.
This $1.9 million initiative complements our existing Greener Suburbs Program and supports our broader vision for a clean, green and sustainable city. It also delivers on our commitment to ensuring that the 2032 Games leave a positive environmental legacy.
Whether it’s cooling our suburbs, enhancing streetscapes, or strengthening Brisbane’s identity as an Olympic host city, this investment in trees is one that will continue to grow in value long after the final race is run.
Our Olympic Tree Planting Program is GOLD, because the Games are more than a moment — they’re a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a better Brisbane for all. 🌳
