Brisbane Metro sustainable transport
Brisbane Metro has secured Queensland’s highest-ever sustainability rating, setting a new benchmark for transport projects while keeping the city moving.
Under the Infrastructure Sustainability Council’s (ISC) rating scheme, the project achieved a score of 82.86, earning a prestigious ‘Leading’ rating – the top category in the national program.
The ISC assessment recognised several project highlights, including:
- Transforming Victoria Bridge into a dedicated public and active transport bridge.
- The innovative Adelaide Street tunnel design that preserved surface-level transport corridors and existing trees.
- Various carbon reduction achievements, including a 77 per cent reduction in embodied carbon compared to the original design.
- More than 222,000 training hours completed for apprenticeships and indigenous peoples.
The recognition comes as Brisbane prepares to open the new Adelaide Street Tunnel for service on Monday 29 September.
The tunnel will carry around 1400 bus and metro trips every weekday, reducing congestion in the CBD and creating capacity for Brisbane’s future growth.
To celebrate the milestone, residents are invited to a community open day on Wednesday 24 September where they can experience the new state-of-the-art tunnel before it begins operating.
More than 3.6 million trips have been taken on metro since it launched, including more than 2.9 million trips on M2 which launched on 28 January and more than 680,000 trips on M1 since it launched on 30 June.
This is just the first stage of the Brisbane Metro, as the project lays the groundwork for future expansions in the State Government’s Brisbane 2032 delivery plan.
