City Botanic Gardens Lagoon

City Botanic Gardens Lagoon

Letting you know that we are rehabilitating Oakman’s Lagoon in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens Central Ward, located near the Alice Street entrance.

I’ve organised for these works to improve water usage and quality at the lower lagoon; and to maintain and protect this space for the Brisbane community, visitors, and future generations.

Work will take place from late April 2025 and should conclude mid July weather permitting.

Work is scheduled for daytime hours 7am-5pm, Monday to Saturday

What does this work include?

Works will include:

  • emptying the pond by gradually pumping out and recycling water over the park vegetation and lawns
  • removing silt from the lagoon
  • inspecting and repairing cracks
  • trimming invasive tree roots
  • installing a new sand bed and pond liners
  • repairing and reinstalling the aeration and fountain system
  • refilling the lagoon with water.

Prior to construction and during works, a fauna spotter and catcher will be present to catch and relocate all aquatic life within the lagoon.

What does this mean for me?

If you visit, live in or are travelling through the area, you may notice an increase in odour, noise, dust and truck movements.

Traffic control will be on site to assist people moving through the area with detour signage in place.

The garden gates will remain open with an exclusion zone near the lagoon and on Alice Street.

Construction machinery will be located in a section of the Bus Stop 95A bus zone on Alice Street. There will be no operational disruptions to the timetabled bus services.

With a children’s playground, café and a calendar of events and activities, the City Botanic Gardens promises a fun day out for all ages.

I hope you have had a chance to cross the new Kangaroo Pont Pedestrian Bridge and pop into Mulga Bills or Stilts.

We are a modern, vibrant and fast-growing capital city; adding our pedestrian bridges and above-water dining destinations makes our lifestyle even better.

This opening builds on our track record of supporting vibrant riverside destinations, such as Howard Smith Wharves, with Stilts and Mulga Bills to take waterfront dining to the next level for you and your visitors to our great city.
