Thousands of Brisbane residents are expected to have a spring cleanout this weekend, with Brisbane City Council cutting green waste costs for residents who ready their yard for the summer storm season.
Green waste tipping will be free at Brisbane’s Resource Recovery Centres this weekend (OCtober 6-7) , while the $30 establishment fee for Council’s green waste recycling bin service will also be waived for the rest of October.
The summer storm season is upon us, so there’s no better time to roll up your sleeves and get in the garden to prepare your home for severe weather.
Brisbane is a great place to live, work and relax, however our subtropical climate means our city is prone to flash flooding, cyclonic winds, thunderstorms and bushfires.
We can’t control the way Mother Nature behaves however we can reduce the impact by preparing our backyards and helping to keep Brisbane clean and green.
To help residents be prepared, I have organised to waive the cost of green waste tipping during two weekend events this October , as well as reducing rates for any green waste recycling bins ordered before November 1.
Whether it’s prunings, branches or weeds, Council is helping residents keep their property tidy and to stay prepared ahead of Brisbane’s notorious summer storm season.
Close to 10,000 people took a trip to a Brisbane Resource Recovery Centre during last year’s green waste tipping weekends, contributing to more than 80,000 tonnes of green waste recycled in the city’s parks and garden beds last financial year.
During last year’s green waste tipping weekends, more than 9,700 car loads took 1,200 tonnes of garden waste to our resource recovery centres, helping to keep the Brisbane clean, green and sustainable.
An additional 1,500 households took up Council’s October 240-litre green waste bin offer last year, with more than 91,000 green bins ordered across the city since the service commenced in 2010.
Council’s resource recovery centres are open from 6.30am to 5.45pm and are located at Nudgee, Willawong, Ferny Grove and Chandler. Residents will be able to dispose of green waste for free at these centres on October 6-7 and 20-21.
Further information about what to take to the resource recovery centres and a quick recycling guide is available by downloading Council’s free Brisbane Bin and Recycling app. For more information on green waste disposal, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or call Council on (07) 3403 8888.
