Homeless Connect

Homeless Connect Donations Open

Brisbane Showgrounds will host the 25th Homeless Connect donation drive this November with more than 1000 meals and hundreds of health checks expected to be provided to our most vulnerable residents.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has put the call out for Brisbane residents to make donations ahead of the Homeless Connect event on November 18.

“Homeless Connect brings together businesses and community groups to provide free medical care, legal advice, hygiene services and accommodation referrals as well as donated goods to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” Cr Schrinner said.

“One thing the pandemic has taught us is that Brisbane’s community spirit shines bright when times are tough.

“With more people experiencing hardship and support services under increased pressure, we need the community’s assistance to help the city’s most vulnerable residents get back on their feet.

“We’re asking people to drop off donations of toiletries and non-perishable food items to their local ward office and donations of toiletries only to their local library.

“While it may seem small, access to essentials like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and deodorant can make a big difference to someone who is living rough.

“We are relying on the generosity of Brisbane residents not only for donations, but to volunteer their time to help with the set-up and logistics of running such a large-scale event. Homeless Connect is a huge effort, so without the support of the community it just wouldn’t be possible.”

Cr Schrinner said Council’s Homeless Connect initiative has helped more than 18,580 people since it first began in 2006.

“At the last Homeless Connect in May, Council helped to serve more than 1370 meals and distribute 54 pallets of donations, as well as facilitate more than 195 health checks by medical and allied health care professionals,” he said.

“It’s about more than just statistics though. Each number represents a person who has been able to access help and support thanks to the generosity and teamwork of our contributors and volunteers.”

Donations can be made at Council ward offices and libraries from 27 September until 5 November. The Homeless Connect will be held on Thursday 18 November 2021 at Brisbane Showgrounds.
