There is so much to see and do in our suburbs these school holidays – Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and my teams have organised more than 450 free and affordable activities – there is something for all ages and interests.
Because we have the experience and track record to run Australia’s largest local government, we keep costs down, meaning we can invest in marvellous community activities.
As a parent and grandparent, I know how tough it can be to keep the children occupied and find activities the whole family can enjoy, while also keeping costs down.
The Schrinner Council is committed to keeping costs down for families and making sure there are plenty of free and affordable options in Brisbane these school holidays.
Nearly 80 per cent of the activities held over the two-week break will be completely free, catering to all interests and budgets.
With the spring weather perfect for play, city parklands such as Central Ward’s Victoria Park and Roma Street Parkland will offer fantastic free activities for kids of all ages.
Victoria Park events include:
- Activities guided by the characters of dirtgirlworld to teach kids about the wonders of nature
- Rock climbing wall
- Yoga for teens at the new Spring Hill Common.
Playtopia! will return to the Roma Street Parkland and offer free workshops for kids aged 5-12:
- Creating bookmarks, badges and paper animals
- Learning new dance moves
- perfecting soccer skills
Children can learn more about Brisbane’s own backyard with Environment Centre activities:
- Bug Detectives – featuring the newest showstopper, the giant burrowing cockroach
- Nature journaling
- Wild Edibles Walks – where kids can taste local edible plants
These programs join more than 140 active and healthy classes held across more than 2100 Brisbane parks, making sure there is a reason to get out and play in every suburb.
Our 22 public pools will switch to summer opening hours from the September school holidays, making sure families can beat the heat after a long day of adventure.
For those wanting to stay indoors, the Schrinner Council’s 33 libraries will host more than 200 free events across the suburbs.
With many of the activities on offer are free of charge, most require booking in advance.
