Vicki delivers Outdoor Cinema at Powerhouse

Vicki delivers Powerhouse revitalisation with an outdoor cinema, night markets, art installations and performance spaces are coming to Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Schrinner Council’s $1 million investment in the popular precinct.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Brisbane Powerhouse is one of our city’s greatest cultural assets, and this investment would deliver more to see and do for residents and visitors.

“We want to ensure this precinct continues to evolve and this new line up of events will support our arts economy and excite art and entertainment seekers,” Cr Schrinner said.

“The Powerhouse is a must-visit destination for tourists as well as a treasure for locals and this new outdoor offering will have something for all ages and interests.

“Brisbane’s fantastic climate means we can enjoy things like outdoor cinemas, nightmarkets and open-air venues all year round.

“Our $1 million investment, along with Federal Government support, will provide the start-up funds to create ongoing cultural events at the Brisbane Powerhouse, with the exciting new offerings to start rolling out from spring.”

Night Feast

  • Night Feast is a month-long celebration of food and art in Brisbane Powerhouse’s forecourt and surrounding parks, launching in early 2023.
  • Mesmerising site design by Dark Mofo’s Bruce McKinven and immersive installations, roaming performances and DJ sets will “surprise and delight the senses”.

Pleasuredome

  • From November, the Performance Lawn becomes home to Pleasuredome, a semipermanent magnificent ivory-sailcloth performance venue. When it’s not filled with patrons, the space will be free for the public to relax within.
  • Brisbane’s newest alfresco theatre and event space can seat up to 450 people for private events or performances from concerts and cabaret to stand-up comedy and circus.

Brisbane Powerhouse CEO/Artistic Director Kate Gould said the introduction of new outdoor events were made possible with the support of Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government’s Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (Rise) Fund.

“Returning to Brisbane last year after an 18-year absence reminded me of our city’s natural beauty. With its sultry climate and luscious landscape, it seems a shame to always head indoors for our cultural fix,” Ms Gould said.

“Brisbane Powerhouse will bring art outside, creating a series of external venues for performance, film and feasting.

“We are grateful to Brisbane City Council for backing our vision to revitalise Brisbane Powerhouse and its environs. And there are more surprises to come.”

Events details are listed below.

Opening Spring 2022

Brisbane Powerhouse in association with Brisbane Festival present

Kaleidoscope

Direct from its premiere at Arts Centre Melbourne, Brisbane Powerhouse hosts Kaleidoscope, the latest project from Melbourne installation artist Keith Courtney.

Scaling a deceptively simple device to epic proportions, Kaleidoscope is a world of constantly shifting illusions.

An immense artwork made from 700sqm of glass, steel, mirrors and moving prisms, visitors navigate a maze of corridors witnessing a slowly revolving display of light and colour. Motion and gravity are distorted and spaces fracture, surprising and disorienting the senses at every turn.

Drawing on the time-honoured charm and simplicity of the kaleidoscope to create a larger-than-life immersive symphony of light, colour and sound, this large-scale new immersive artwork has been designed to warm the heart and temper the soul.

Keith Courtney is one of the masterminds behind the acclaimed House of Mirrors and 1000 Doors. This latest work was developed in collaboration with visual artist Ash Keating, composer Tamil Rogeon and artist Samantha Slicer and a team of highly skilled technicians.

Courtney has a track record of delivering high-quality and immersive art projects in collaboration with major Australian festivals, international artists and venues. Previous work includes The Crosses, a series of inverted crucifixes perched across the Hobart waterfront for MONA’s 2018 Dark Mofo; Radiant Lines, produced in 2012 in collaboration with UK artist Asif Kahn; Stickwork in collaboration with American Artist Patrick Dougherty in 2014 and the IY Project for Dark Mofo 2017 in collaboration with UK light artist Chris Levine.

Keith Courtney says: “No one will have the same experience in Kaleidoscope – this is a multi-sensory and, at times, physical experience where the visitor is completely submerged in sound and light – a vortex of serenity to somewhere or nowhere.”

Brisbane Festival Artistic Director Louise Bezzina says: “We are delighted that this latest work by installation artist Keith Courtney will appear as part of this year’s Brisbane Festival. It will add another dimension to the strong line-up of new Australian work appearing in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse this Festival season.”

Kaleidoscope will appear at Brisbane Powerhouse from 12 August – 3 October 2022 followed by an international tour.

Kaleidoscope has been supported with funds from the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (Rise) Fund – an Australian Government initiative.

(One of) the best things to do and see in Melbourne.
