School children will be spoiled for choice these school holidays, with Council serving up more than 500 activities to keep kids off the couch.
Parents will be able to rely on Council for boredom-busting ideas with a range of free and low-cost activities on offer for kids of all ages.
“Brisbane is a lifestyle city and Council is committed to delivering leisure opportunities for residents, young and old,” Cr Howard said.
“Children will be able to kick boredom to the kerb, with hundreds of events taking place all over the CBD and suburbs these school holidays.
“Brisbane’s 33 libraries will be school holiday ready with 380 free activities, including virtual reality, ghost stories, live music and more.
“Council’s Chill Out program will target teens with circus skills, abseiling, clay-modelling and stand-up paddle boarding as part of a suite of more than 100 free and low-cost outdoor activities.
“The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium also has some exciting new additions to its line-up, with new Friday Night Live shows hosted by astronomers and fun family-friendly events including the hunt for extra-terrestrial life in ‘We Are Aliens’.
“If you’re visiting the Planetarium, why not stick around learn how to make sushi or see a real Cacao tree while you learn about the history of chocolate as part of a clean and green program at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens.”
Cr Howard said with the weather heating up, Council pools would also be a hit over the September break with longer hours starting this Saturday.
“Council pools continue to grow in popularity, with an increase of 100 per cent in pool patronage over the past 10 years,” she said.
Brisbane Festival is also a hit this time of year, with more than 500 events over the 22-day program.
“Brisbane Festival is the city’s biggest cultural events, with the colourful program of entertainment coinciding with the spring school break,” Cr Howard said.
“There’s something for everyone at this year’s festival, which will culminate in a lightshow extravaganza at Sunsuper Riverfire on September 30.
“Wherever you live in Brisbane, we have something to keep the kids entertained – all families can join in the fun these school holidays and enjoy a well-earned break.”
