Story Bridge Maintenance Works – Schrinner Council Delivering for Brisbane

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and I continue to invest in the safe operation and long‑term maintenance of the city’s most critical infrastructure, including the iconic Story Bridge.

As your local Councillor, I work closely with Council officers and the Schrinner Council to ensure essential maintenance is delivered proactively, safely and with minimal disruption wherever possible. These works are part of Council’s commitment to maintaining Brisbane’s transport network so residents, commuters and visitors can rely on it every day.

Why maintenance is required

The Story Bridge is one of Brisbane’s busiest crossings and is subject to constant traffic, weather exposure and structural pressure. Regular planned maintenance is essential to protect the bridge’s integrity, avoid emergency repairs, and ensure it remains safe for all road users now and into the future.

When works will occur

Planned maintenance works will take place between Thursday 2 April and Monday 13 April 2026. During this period, motorists will see a mix of lane closures and short‑term traffic changes to allow works to be carried out safely.

The most significant impact will be a full closure of the Story Bridge from 9:00pm Saturday 11 April until 1:00pm Sunday 12 April 2026. This closure is in conjunction with the Tour de Brisbane.

9pm Thursday 2 April to  5am Monday 13 April, 2026

  • Single kerbside lane closure from 9pm on Thursday 2 April 2026 until 9pm Saturday 11 April 2026
  • Full closure of the Story Bridge between from 9pm on Saturday 11 April until 1pm Sunday 12 April 2026 (working with Tour de Brisbane Event).
  • Conta-flow maintaining one lane each in each direction 1pm on Sunday 12 April until 5am on Monday 13 April 2026 –

What to expect

  • Temporary lane closures and contra‑flow arrangements
  • Clearly signed detours
  • Traffic controllers and Queensland Police on site
  • Delays, particularly during peak travel times

While any closure is inconvenient, these works are essential to keep the bridge operating safely for decades to come.

Planning ahead

Residents and commuters are encouraged to plan their trips in advance, allow extra travel time, and consider alternative routes or travel times where possible. Live traffic updates will be available throughout the works period.
