Suburban sports get $50 million Budget boost
The Schrinner Council will invest more than $50 million in upgrading Brisbane’s sporting facilities over the next 12 months, cementing our position as an Olympic-ready city, and future-proofing suburban sport for future generations.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the upcoming 2021-22 Budget would provide a more than $50 million boost for community sporting groups with funds for improvements, maintenance, and partnerships.
“Brisbane residents of all ages love their sport. Be it children having their first kick to seasoned sport teams, our sports grounds are used all year round,” Cr Schrinner said.
“With hosting the 2032 Olympics in reach these suburban sporting grounds could well be the training grounds of our future Olympic stars working towards representing their country at a Games held in their home city.
“When I became Lord Mayor, I promised the biggest investment in parks and greenspace our city has ever seen. We’re delivering on that promise.
“This significant investment in our sporting facilities will not only maintain existing sporting grounds, it will also ensure they are high-quality facilities.
“As part of a multi-million-dollar investment, and as promised during last year’s election, the Schrinner Council will invest almost $1.2 million over three years for a major upgrade at Chelmer Sports Group in partnership with Queensland Cricket, AFL Queensland and Western Suburbs District Cricket Club.
“We will be delivering improvements at the incredibly popular western suburbs sporting ground, including a refurbished clubhouse, improved spectator areas and new change rooms.
“In the eastern suburbs $750,000 is allocated to upgrade the fields at Giffin Park at Coorparoo which is home to the Mighty Kings AFL club.
“The inner-city Raymond Park will receive $287,000 to improve the fields which are used by many sporting groups including the Kangaroo Point Rovers and the Brisbane City Quidditch Club.
“For northsiders, Emerson Park in the Grange will receive $459,000 to upgrade and improve the fields.
“The Budget will also include more than $19 million for new sports parks, including the Nudgee Recreation Reserve and $16.8 million for maintenance and improvement works at existing sporting clubs in our suburbs.”
Cr Schrinner said our sporting grounds were well used and this investment will make a big impact to sporting clubs working to retain and attract new players.
“Brisbane is a sporting city and the Schrinner Council has chosen to invest more than $50 million to create a more liveable city and make Brisbane even better,” he said.
“Be it for social sport or future Olympians, you will never be far from a sports field in Brisbane. I encourage everyone to get out, visit your closet sporting club and get active”
The 2021-22 Brisbane City Council Budget will be handed down on Wednesday 16 June 2021 which will include this Suburban sports $50 million boost.
