Brisbane City Council is proud to support our city’s older residents through a wide range of programs, services, and discounts that help make life easier, safer, more affordable — and more connected. Whether you’re out exploring the city, enjoying your local community, or staying active at home, we’re here to support you every step of the way.


💰 Pensioner Rates Rebates

Eligible pensioners may receive a rebate on their Council rates, providing financial relief for those on fixed incomes.

  • Brisbane offers the most generous pensioner rebate in South East Queensland.

  • Rebates are available to holders of a Centrelink or DVA Pensioner Concession Card.

🧾 Early Payment Discount

All ratepayers — including seniors — can access a discount for early payment of rates, helping reward forward planning and good financial management.


🚍 Senior-Friendly Transport

We’re helping older residents stay mobile and connected with:

  • Free off-peak travel for eligible seniors on Brisbane City Council buses, CityCats and ferries

  • Improved bus stop accessibility and priority seating

🌳 Active & Healthy Seniors Program

We run free or low-cost fitness, wellbeing and social activities tailored for over-50s across Brisbane — including tai chi, walking groups, aqua aerobics and more.

Council supports and funds community events that celebrate Brisbane’s older residents, including:

  • Seniors Month celebrations across libraries and community halls

  • Local performances, storytelling events and workshops

  • Digital literacy sessions to help seniors get online and stay safe


🏠 Accessible Infrastructure and Safe Streets

Council is investing in safer, more accessible neighbourhoods, with projects such as:

  • Better footpaths and kerb ramps

  • Improved lighting and pedestrian crossings

  • Seating, shade and toilet upgrades in public spaces


🤝 Support Services and Connections

We also partner with community organisations to deliver support and social services, including:

  • Meals on Wheels and home support programs

  • Community transport options

  • Social inclusion initiatives for isolated seniors
