New housing hope to support Brisbane residents

Housing hope for Brisbane

New Community Housing Project for Zillmere Backed by Schrinner Council

Brisbane City Council, under the leadership of Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, is partnering with Housing for Change to deliver new community housing in Zillmere—an initiative strongly supported by community advocates including Vicki.

This important project will transform underutilised Council land into safe, secure, and sustainable homes for residents in Brisbane’s north, helping address growing housing needs across the city.

A Practical Response to Housing Demand

With Brisbane facing an ongoing shortage of community housing, the Schrinner Council is stepping in to help unlock supply. The project will deliver 16 new homes on approximately 3,000 square metres of land at 39 Jennings Street.

The broader 13,600 square metre site will continue to serve the community, including its use as a sandbag distribution location during storm season—ensuring the land continues to support residents in multiple ways.

Vicki has welcomed the initiative, highlighting the importance of practical, community-focused solutions that respond to real needs on the ground.

Partnership Driving Delivery

Housing for Change will lead planning approvals and project delivery, while Council is playing a key enabling role. This includes covering survey and development application costs associated with subdividing the land, helping to fast-track the project.

Modular construction will be used to accelerate delivery and keep costs down, ensuring more homes can be provided sooner.

Vicki has noted that partnerships like this are essential, bringing together government and not-for-profit organisations to create meaningful outcomes for vulnerable residents.

Supporting Women and Vulnerable Residents

Housing for Change is focused on delivering secure, affordable housing—particularly for women experiencing housing insecurity. The organisation’s approach centres on long-term stability, independence, and dignity.

Chair Kirsty Rourke said the project reflects the organisation’s mission to create sustainable housing pathways and deliver lasting social impact.

Vicki also emphasised the importance of ensuring housing is located close to transport, services, and community networks, making this Zillmere site especially valuable.

A Broader Commitment to Housing Supply

While community housing is primarily the responsibility of State and Federal governments, Brisbane City Council continues to play a proactive role. This project forms part of a broader strategy that includes planning reforms, housing incentives, and financial support for affordable housing developments.

Council has already waived millions of dollars in infrastructure charges to support projects across Brisbane, including developments in Stones Corner and Chermside.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said increasing housing supply is key to helping more people access a home sooner.

“The only way to help more people get into a home is to increase housing supply, and that’s why we’re taking practical action to support more homes sooner across Brisbane,” Cr Schrinner said.

Delivering Real Outcomes for the Community

For Vicki, this project represents more than just new housing—it’s about strengthening the community and ensuring that vulnerable residents have access to stable, dignified accommodation.

By unlocking surplus land and fostering collaboration, the partnership between Council and Housing for Change is helping turn opportunity into tangible outcomes.

As Vicki and other community leaders have highlighted, initiatives like this are a vital step toward addressing Brisbane’s housing challenges—while building a stronger, more inclusive city for the future.
